How to cook the famous Malaysian dish, Nasi Lemak!

 Everyone seems to love Nasi Lemak. There's a saying says that if you are Malaysian, it is impossible for you to not love this dish! In fact, it could be considered as the Malaysian national dish. So, what's so special about Nasi Lemak? Jom! Let's take a look at the recipe for this amazing dish!

Nasi Lemak

Rice cooked in coconut milk



Total time needed: Approximately 1 hour
Masa keseluruhan: Kira-kira 1 jam

Total servings: 2-3 persons
Jumlah hidangan: 2-3 orang


Ingredients:
Bahan-Bahan:

  • 1 cup of basmati rice
    1 cawan beras basmati
  • 0.5 cup of coconut milk
    0.5 cawan santan
  • 1 cup of water
    1 cawan air
  • 1 piece of pandan leaf
    1 helai daun pandan
  • 3 (small) slices of ginger
    3 hirisan (kecil) halia
  • A pinch of salt
    Secubit garam


Ingredients for the sambal:
Bahan-bahan untuk sambal:

  • 2 cups of anchovies
    2 cawan ikan bilis
  • 20 stalks of dried chili (finely grounded)
    20 tangkai cili kering dikisar halus
  • 3 red onions
    3 bawang merah
  • 3 white onions
    3 bawang putih
  • Some ginger (A little bit will do)
    Sedikit halia
  • 1 cup of tamarind water
    1 cawan air asam jawa
  • 2 tablespoon of white sugar
    2 sudu gula
  • A pinch of salt
    Secubit garam
  • Some belacan (A little bit will do)
    Sedikit belacan


Steps to prepare the sambal:
Cara penyediaan sambal:

  1. Fry the anchovies and 1 sliced red onion for a while. Do not overcook it.
    Goreng Ikan bilis bersama dengan satu bawang merah yang telah dihiris. Jangan goreng terlalu lama.
  2. At the second wok, stir-fry the sliced dried chili, 2 red onions (sliced), 3 white onions (sliced), ginger and a little bit of belacan using low heat. Add some water.
    Tumiskan cili kering yang dikisar, 2 biji bawang merah yang dikisar, 3 biji bawang putih yang dikisar, sepotong halia dan sedikit belacan di wajan kedua. Gunakan api perlahan dan tambahkan air.
  3. Add 2 tablespoon of white sugar, a pinch of salt and 1 cup of tamarind water.
    Masukkan 2 sudu gula, secubit garam dan 1 cawan air asam jawa.
  4. Add the anchovies and red onions that are fried just now into the wok.
    Masuk ikan bilis dan bawang merah yang telah digoreng ke dalam wajan.
  5. Stop frying when you think it is concentrated enough. Your delicious and authentic Malaysian sambal is now ready to be served!
    Tutupkan api semasa sambal itu cukup pekat. Sekarang, "Sambal Malaysia" kamu boleh dihidangkan.


Steps to prepare the coconut milk rice:
Cara penyediaan nasi lemak:

  1. Soak the uncooked rice (1 cup) in water for at least 15 minutes.
    Rendam beras (1 cawan) lebih kurang 15 minit sebelum masak.
  2. Add the soaked uncooked rice, 1 cup of water, 0.5 cup of coconut milk, 1 piece of pandan leaf, 1 pinch of salt and 3 small slices of ginger into the rice cooker.
    Masukkan beras yang telah direndam, 1 cawan air, 0.5 cawan santan, 1 helai daun pandan, secubit garam dan 3 hirisan kecil halia ke dalam periuk nasi.
  3. Cook it in the rice cooker for approximately 20 minutes, you can prepare the sambal while waiting for the rice to be cooked.
    Masak dalam periuk nasi untuk kira-kira 20 minit, kamu boleh menyediakan sambal sekarang.
  4. Your authentic Malaysian "Nasi Lemak" is now ready to be served with hard-boiled eggs, fresh cucumber, roasted peanuts and fried anchovies!
    Nasi Lemak Malaysia kamu boleh dihidangkan dengan telur rebus, timun, kacang and ikan bilis goreng!
